Flaws: material testing, user experience
Week 8 Pitch:
(speaker 1) We are CoCupsable and we are developing a reusable, collapsible travel mug for hot beverage consumers who need a reusable and easy to transport cup that offers best of all convenience.
Today's takeaway coffee culture may appear to be offering consumers the convenience of a quick cuppa on the go, however the reality is, that this is causing a detrimental effect on the environment. As the combined paper and plastic that these cups are made from cannot be broken down and recycled so it just ends up polluting our land, and waterways. We are talking tens of thousands of coffee cups hitting our landfill, daily, where it will continue to stay for at least the next 50 years. The consumption of one coffee cup per day, per person, for a year equates to 10kg of waste.
There are a variety of reusable cups on the market however, research shows that the lifespan of a reusable cup is generally only between 8-12 weeks before the consumer begins to experience feelings of inconvenience towards carry it around.
(Speaker 2 brit) Our research showed that the main reason people don’t use their reusable cups is because they are inconvenient to carry around and they take up too much space.
But what if there was a reusable travel cup that could be easy to transport when not in use? What if the cup itself was as thin as the wallet in your back pocket?
(Speaker 3) We at CoCupsable are looking at these consumers and wondering how can we get more people using less disposable cups and alleviate the nuisance of carrying these bulky reusable cups around.
We have designed a reusable collapsible cup which is made out of silicone and bamboo which collapses down like so (demonstrate with blue cup). The materials can at the end of their life be recycled or repurposed. It includes a lid which is secured by a thread and a mouth piece which is secured by a plug. The different collapsable levels each show the measurements for the different cup size so you can have a little long black in the morning and enjoy a massive Mocha in the afternoon. (point to different sizes) These cups will come in a variety of colour patterns with our first release being these combinations. To ensure we keep our product relevant in the market we hope to continue developing these designs and coming out with limited edition designs, working with artist and designers, and involving other causes.
(Speaker 2 brit) We've spoken to a variety of cafes located in different places around the wellington region and a number of them have said they would like “more initiative around reuseable cups” and in sharing our ideas with them they expressed interest and enthusiasm towards our idea.
When asked - Would your business be interested in this product or even selling this product in store? The response was positive though aesthetic was definitely an important factor.
(Speaker 4) In keeping with our eco-friendly ethos we want this product to be locally made. So we would like to be able to work with manufacturers in New Zealand and distributors which includes our own physical and online shop along with local retail stores who will sell our product, as well as local cafes who will also sell our product.
To begin with, we will start to distribute our cup within the Wellington Region due to its vast Coffee culture and the macro trend of being eco-conscious that is growing within our city. In the future we hope to increase our distribution to the rest of NZ and eventually become an international brand.
We also know that the problem we are facing here stems from a behavioural pattern and we cannot change people's behaviours just by inventing a great product on it’s own so we are looking into ways we can educate and influence this behaviour change to create a further impact on consumers.
(Speaker 2 brit) Our next step is to raise the funds to get this product manufactured at a small number, so that we can run a pilot to test the product's performance over the 12 week period in which people usually stop using reusable cups. The results from this pilot will help develop the design further to ensure that when it is released to the market it will be the best. Our pilot will run in Wellington for the same reasons spoken of previously. So we are asking for a hand in taking on this next step, with your help we are one step closer to influencing a greater change towards
